Recorded April 28, 2021

Simulation has the potential to replace all or part of the prototyping process and is increasingly considered a pre-production strategy for reducing time and cost. Faculty at NC State University are incorporating simulation technology into our teaching and research that includes a color managed yarn inventory, and the ability to simulate knit and woven fabric as well as some on the body garments. In addition, we are utilizing functions within specialty software to teach how to evaluate knits and woven designs before production.

About the Speakers

Traci Lamar, PhD, is Professor at North Carolina State's Wilson College of Textiles where she serves as Director of the Textile Design program and has been a member of the faculty since 2000. Her scholarship and teaching focus includes textile design technology, leveraging textile design technology for sustainability, and scholarship of teaching in creative practice and method development. Lamar has received international awards for her creative scholarship and scholarship of teaching, and many funded grants supporting educational projects that provided high-impact experiential learning for textile design students. She has worked in the field of textile product design, including both fashion and textile design, for over 35 years.

Lisa P Chapman, PhD, Associate Professor, North Carolina State University, is University Faculty Scholar, Director of Graduate Programs, and an Associate Professor in Textile and Apparel Technology and Management at NC State University. Dr. Chapman's research focuses on digital design technologies that aid the transition from design to manufacturing. Expertise in this area allows application of specialized knowledge to a broad spectrum of research such as integral knitting; digital printing; color calibration; CAD process modeling; 3D simulation of knitted, printed and woven fabrics; rapid prototyping; mass customization; and sustainable product design.
